Chapter 7

I first encountered Jamie as I lounged on the uppermost shelf of the cat tree at the Langston Falls SPCA. He entered the cat room with a chubby shelter assistant named Kelsey–she loved us cats. She would come in and pet and scratch me every day. A wonderful human.

“Here he is. This is Scottie,” Kelsey said and pointed at me. “He’s been here too long and is close to being euthanized.” She reached up and rubbed my neck.

“He’s a beautiful boy,” Jamie said. “I love Tabbies.”

“He’s got a little bit of white on his chest that makes him look like he has a bowtie on.”

“I see it. Can I hold him?”

“Sure.”

Kelsey came toward me and took hold of me under my stomach. After lifting me off the shelf, she guided me into his arms. Jamie took me and held me close. I wiggled a bit and settled into him. He was warm and soft.

“He’s purring,” Jamie said and ran his hand over my shoulders and down my back.

“He’s really friendly and quite docile. A real friendly cat.”

“How come no one’s adopted him?” Jamie asked.

“He’s eight-years-old, we think. So many people coming into adopt want young cats or kittens, so older cats are not rescued into forever homes as often. It’s sad, really. Just cause a cat is older, that doesn’t mean they’re not good cats.” She smiled.

“I like saving older cats. My last cat, Sam, a Siamese, I got from my father before he died. We guess Sam was seven-years-old. He was a stray. My dad took him in and when he couldn’t care for Sam anymore, I got him. Dad didn’t want to risk him getting put down, so he asked me to take him. And I’m so glad I did. I had just bought a new house and finally moved out of a rental that didn’t allow pets. It was great having a cat again,” Jamie said.

“Do you still have Sam?” Kelsey asked.

“No,” Jamie said and sniffed. “I had to have him put to sleep two months ago. He had lost control of his hind end. He couldn’t walk anymore or make it to the litter box. The vet said there was nothing more that could be done for him. So...it broke my heart.”

He scratched my back and put his face in my fur.

“How did he get here?” Jamie asked.

“He was a stray, too,” Kelsey said.

I was abandoned.

“I’ll take him.”

“Okay, great. We need you to fill out an application to adopt. Then after you’re approved, you can take him home.”

“Do you have anymore that are close to being put down? A companion for Scottie and me–especially me–would be good,” Jamie said and put me back on the carpeted shelf.

“Yes. There’s one more. She is a feisty one, but she can be very cuddly. Her name is Tanzy,” Kelsey said.

“Tell me about her.”

“She came in because she kept attacking the children of the previous owners. Do you have any kids living with you?”

“I have one daughter who’s grown up and moved out.
